An original black and white photo depicting a portrait of James Dean during the shooting of the Giant, a 1956 American epic Western drama film directed by George Stevens, from a screenplay adapted by Fred Guiol and Ivan Moffat from Edna Ferbers 1952 novel. Giant was the last of Deans three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination. Signed and inscribed, Thanks a lot, by James Dean, upper left. Provenance: from a collector of stars signed photos from Cannes, home of The Cannes Film Festival, an international film festival. James Byron Dean, 1931 to 1955, was an American actor with a career that lasted five years. He is regarded as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film Rebel Without a Cause 1955, in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden 1955 and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant 1956.
