An antique early 20th-century English handcrafted flower arrangement. The piece is composed of seashells wired together and bound with silk thread and dyed raffia. The arrangement is set in a Chinese porcelain bowl, red seal mark on the bottom. Such shellwork was usually made by the Conchs, originally British citizens who had migrated to the Bahamian islands before making their way to southeast Florida in the 20th century. Shell art was a way for Conch women to gain financial independance. Collectible Folk Craft, Decor, Shellwork.
