A cast bronze French statue Le Desespoir, Despair, after the original model by Auguste Rodin, French, 1840 to 1917. This sculpture is a part of the famous The Gates of Hell series, inspired by Dantes epic poem. The sculpture represents a nude male figure in a pose of deep contemplation and despair. Signed to the base: A. Rodin. Raised on a green granite pedestal. The original marble work was created circa 1890 and now is kept in the Saint Louis Art Museum. Note: Francois Auguste Rene Rodin was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman like approach to his work.
