Lot 0411: ANTIQUE GRAND TOUR ERA EGYPTIAN WOODEN SHABTI BOX

An antique late Grand Tour era hand-painted wooden box, a reproduction of an Egyptian shabti box from the New Kingdom period, ca. 13th century BC. The shabti was a funerary figurine used in ancient Egyptian funerary practices to impersonate the deceased. The front of the box depicts two mummified fugures and bears hieroglyphical inscriptions. The box of Paramnekhu, a servant in the Place of Truth who was a son or grandson of Sennedjem. The original piece is now in the collection of Metropolitan Museum. Grand Tour was the 17th to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men.
