An antique Japanese, Meiji era, Satsuma polychrome enamel pottery vase. The amphora shaped vase is made in the manner of Chin Ju Kan. The exterior of the ware is adorned with polychrome hand enameled relief medallions depicting scenes with a Geisha lady standing on a water dragon in a seascape, and a warrior on a horse in a forest landscape surrounded by floral, foliage, and scrollwork motifs with gilt accents, and medallions with flowers, Phoenix birds, and mythological creatures. The neck of the ware is decorated with dragon, floral, foliage, and traditional Greek ornaments. The vase features a pair of figural handles made in the shapes of heads of Foo dogs with open mouthes. Fine detail work. Marked with a six character red ink mark, on the bottom. Circa: late 19th century. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
