A striking and well detailed bronze spiritual sculpture from Benin, now known as Nigeria, in West Africa. The sculpture depicts a man walking on all fours with bells around his neck and belt. Two people come out from behind the man. One of these people is a warrior with a severed head and a weapon in his hands. The second woman comes out from his back. A woman has a bowl of food in her hands. The Benin Empire, 1440 to 1897, was a pre colonial African state in what is now modern Nigeria. Provenance: New Jersey, private collection.
