Lot 0139: ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OUR LADY OF IVERON IN SILVER OKLAD

An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Virgin Mary with Christ Child in the Panagia Portaitissa iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is enclosed in a gilt silver riza or oklad with etched decor and titled in Church Slavonic on the bottom. Hallmark of 84 silver standard and makers mark are on the rim. The backside is lined with pink velvet. Our Lady of Iveron, also known as Iverskaya in Russian, is an Eastern Orthodox icon of the Virgin Mary in the Georgian Iviron monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, where it is believed to have been since the year 999.
