Jen Gen Paul, French, American, 1895 to 1975, oil painting on canvas depicting a rider on a horse in a cityscape, probably the fictional character Don Quixote from the novel by Miguel De Cervantes. Signed lower left. Framed. Gen Paul is known for Expressionist figure, rhythmic city scene painting, musicians, engraving. Paul first exhibited at the Salon dAutomne and the Salon des Independants in Paris in 1920. In 1928, his works were exhibited with those of Pablo Picasso and Chaim Soutine. The paintings of 1930s reflect a more somber mood with precise lines and carefully chosen colors and an emphasis of rhythm over motion. One of a kind artwork.
