An antique Russian Orthodox icon of John the Baptist. The icon depicts Saint John the Baptist, a Judaean preacher active in the area of the Jordan River in the early 1st century AD, with the Christ Child in a chalice as the Lamb of God. Tempera and gold on a wooden panel. John the Baptist is also known as Saint John the Forerunner in Eastern Orthodoxy. Circa the late 19th century.
