Sigismund II Augustus ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland in the 16th century, and his coinage reflects the periods coinage traditions. The obverse of this half groat features a knight on horseback brandishing a sword, a common motif on coins of the era, along with the date.
