A gold tone plate showing an engraved title and the name of the artist, on the front of the frame, lower to the center. The present work is an authors copy of Rolla, painted in 1878 based on the romantic novel of the same name by Alfred de Musset, the artists most famous work and an icon of late nineteenth century French art. Now located in the collection of the Musee des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux, Museum of Fine Arts of Bordeaux, France. Here Gervex faithfully reprises the detail and palette of the monumental original, with only very minor changes. Provenance: The original painting Rolla was sold at Sothebys, London, 19th Century European Paintings, 25 May 2016, lot 6. The painting illustrates one of the scenes of the romantic poem of the same name by Alfred de Musset 1833. Originally admitted to the 1878 Paris Salon, the painting was excluded from it before the exhibition opened to the public on grounds of immorality and obscenity. Henri Gervex was a French painter who studied painting under Alexandre Cabanel, Pierre Nicolas Brisset, and Eugène Fromentin.
