An antique Russian Imperial astrakhan fur papakha hat of a Cossack regiment non commissioned officer of the Life Guards. The hat is adorned with a military pin badge and an engraved plate, for Distinction for the Turkish war of 1877 and 1878. Papakha is a mens fur headdress. It became widespread in the Russian army among the units that fought in the Caucasus. In 1855, it was introduced into the Cossack troops as a winter headdress.
