An antique Russian Orthodox icon of Holy John The Forerunner, hand-painted in egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood panel with raised kovcheg borders. Central Russia, 19th century. The icon is finely executed in bright colors on gold ground. John the Baptist is depicted frontally, with powerful angelic wings spread wide behind his back - this is how the icon painters reflected the name given to him as the Angel of the Desert.
