Eugene Henri Cauchois, French, 1850 to 1911, an antique oil on canvas painting Still Life with peonies and other flowers. Signed by the artist lower right. Housed in a richly decorated gilt wood and gesso frame. Provenance: Priory Gallery, Cheltehman; after 1986 in Michael Appleby’s collection, then in a private collection in New York. Eugene Henri Cauchois was born in Rouen, France in 1850. He was a student of Duboe, Cabanel and Quost. By 1874, Eugene was regularly represented in the Paris Salons with flower and genre pieces. In 1890, he was elected a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais. From the late 1890s into the early 1900s he won three medals: third place, a bronze and second place. In his later years, he turned mainly to decorative painting and embellished the walls of a school in the 6th arrondissement with flowers from different seasons. One of a kind artwork.
