Minnesota born artist John Spelman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under John H. Vanderpoel and Charles F. Browne and was known for his Minnesota and Great Lakes area landscapes. He also spent time in the South painting the mountains around Gatlinburg and Asheville, North Carolina with Chicago painter Rudolph Ingerle, with whom he shared a similar style. Spelman's landscapes are broadly brushed and rich in color. To heighten their visual impact, he often used strong contrasts of light and dark. One of a kind artwork.
