Stipple engraving on paper. The artwork depicts a scene from the Merry Wives of Windsor play by William Shakespeare. Titled Falstaff in the Buck Basket, Act III, Scene 3, with quotes underneath. After an original design by Matthew William Peters, 1742 to 1814, a British artist, as indicated in the lower left. Engraved by Peter Simon, 1764 to 1813, a British printmaker, as indicated in the lower right. Published by John and Josiah Boydell in 1793. The image was conceived for John Boydells Shakespeare Gallery, launched in 1786 as a publishing-cum-exhibition scheme that included a new illustrated edition of the plays, sets of large and small engravings, and a gallery on Londons Pall Mall. The latter opened in 1789 with thirty-four paintings and contained about one hundred and seventy works the time Boydell went bankrupt and auctioned the contents in 1805. Black frame.
