Gulam Rasool Santosh, Indian, 1929 to 1997, oil painting on canvas depicting a Figurative composition with geometric and floral elements, 1989. Signed, inscribed, and dated, on the backside. Ghulam Rasool Santosh, also known as G. R. Santosh, was a prominent Indian painter and poet. He was best known for his themes inspired by Kashmir Shaivism. In 1979, he became the recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem titled Be Soakh Rooh. Gulam Santosh is known for Landscape painting, commercial art, weaving, papier mache. Gulam Rasool Santosh was born in the Kashmir valley in 1929. Slowly he returned to painting and joined the Progressive Arts Association in Kashmir started by S.H. Raza, mobilizing Kashmiri painters. As a member of this group, Santosh showed his work all over India. He won the scholarship to study Fine Arts under N.S. Bendre at the MS University, Baroda in 1954. Santosh has held over 30 solo exhibitions. He received the Lalit Kala Akademi award in 1973 and the Padma Shri in 1977. One of a kind artwork.
