An antique Norwegian 930 silver gilt salt cellar modeled as a Viking ship decorated with exquisite plique a jour enamel patterns by Marius Hammer. The plique a jour enamel is a technique in which the enamel is applied to the membranes in a thin layer, creating a luminous effect. Marked to the bottom: M. HAMMER 930S. Circa 1900. Marius Hammer, 1847 to 1927, was a Norwegian silversmith who was professionally active in Bergen. He was best known for his plique-a-jour enamelled spoons, popular with tourists and exported in large quantities.
