A gouache and watercolor on paper painting Medusa by Eugene Berman Russian, American, 1899 to 1972. Signed and dated on the lower center 1968. Provenance: Museum of Fine Arts, exhibition November 15 - January 3, 1971. The University of Utah. Eugene Berman was a painter and decorator and became known for his imaginary landscapes and for his Baroque stage set designs including for ballets and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In Russia he studied under P. S. Naumov and S. Grusenberg. In France, he became a leader among the Neo-Romantic artists, who defied the prevalent abstract movements including Cubism and Futurism and focused on expression of human emotion.
