An antique 19th century gilt bronze statue by Victor Rousseau, Belgium 1865 to 1954. The bronze statue of a young artist woman holding an artists palette and paint brushes. Titled on the front plaque: Peinture. Signed to the base: Rousseau. Born into a family of Belgian stonemasons, Victor Rousseau became a pupil of sculptor Georges Houstont before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Winner of the Godecharles competition in 1890, he spent several years traveling in England, Italy and France, where he discovered Art Nouveau.
