Lot 0838: ANTIQUE CHINESE QING DYNASTY LADIES PORCELAIN VASE

41 reviews

An antique Chinese Qing Dynasty hand painted porcelain vase with a fluted neck. The painting on the vase depicts two ladies playing the Guzheng in a courtyard. The base, the neck, and the mouth are decorated with red ink floral, foliage, and scrollwork patterns. A red seal is on the backside. Marked with a red ink seal, on the bottom. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The vase was probably potted in Jingdezhen where imperial kilns of the Ming 1368 to 1644 and Qing 1644 to 1911 dynasties were located. It was then sent north to Beijing to be decorated by court painters. The painting on the vase was minutely drawn in fine enamel glass paste colors. The modeling of the figures, especially the faces and hands, as well as the rendering of the shrubs in the background, reveal an awareness of European painting techniques. This reflects the influence of Jesuit painters such as Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688 to 1766, who were active at the court.
