A pair of small antique Japanese, Late Meiji era, Satsuma pottery vases. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The vases are decorated with hand painted traditional Japanese ornaments, gilding, and depictions of Buddhist monks, or Arhat, with a white dragon. Each piece is calligraphically marked, on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. In Buddhism, an arhat is one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved Nirvana and liberated from the endless cycle of rebirth. Mahayana Buddhist traditions have used the term for people far advanced along the path of Enlightenment, but who may not have reached full Buddhahood.
