An antique Japanese wooden shield. Ninko or Komei era, mid-19th century. Black lacquered piece with an arched central part. The piece is decorated with gilt family crest, presumably deriving from the Fujiwara clan, one of the four major noble clans in Japan. The inner side is covered with red lacquer.
