An ancient Roman Republic period bronze miniature sculpture, dated circa 1st C BC to 1st C AC, right after the Marian Reforms. Portrays the Goddess Minerva Athena in standing position with a raised arm, originally holding a lance; the other hand lower and originally holding a shield. Her distinctive helmet, a symbol of military prowess and protection. The sculpture originally has a Medusa head on her chest area, today difficult to notice. The general characterization of the Goddess as a warrior with her Corinthian-Spartan helmet and the weaponry made her a favorite protector deity for Hoplites and other ancient military peoples. However, the present piece has a helmet structured more like a legion Galea helmet than its predecessor from Greece, having the face area much more open and visible.
