An antique Russian Orthodox Burning Bush icon of Mother of God. The mixed media icon with egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood panel. The Burning Bush, literally: fireproof bush, is an iconographic type of the Mother of God in Orthodoxy. The name of the icon goes back to the Old Testament image of the same name. This type of icons symbolically reveals several aspects of her veneration at once and is based on the most important Old Testament prototypes of the incarnation of Christ. In the center of the icon is an image of the Mother of God with a baby, who, as a rule, holds in her hands a number of symbolic attributes associated with Old Testament prophecies: the Mount from the prophecy of Daniel, Jacobs Ladder, Ezekiels Gate, etc. This image is enclosed in an eight pointed star formed by two quadrangles green and red, the natural color of the Bush and the color of the flame that embraced it. Circa: 19th century. Russian Religious Items and Collectibles.
