Rare and exquisitely crafted ritual religious Bobo Mandinga Mask dated circa early XX century. The almost minimalistic design on this primitive artwork adds a sense of contemporary modernity, the same aesthetic effect felt by cubist artists decades ago. Impressive African zoomorphic mask representing the antelope Kan in Bwa Bobo art. A traditional but scarce piece made of wood in the shape of a stylized antelope head, engraved to the surface with deep lines. Large horns extending up, small circular eyes to the front with a projecting mouth. Engraved areas were filled with a buff pigment, almost faded out. The Bwa and Bobo people have maintained their belief in animistic practices and it is the masks that represent the spirits of the bush and take on the form of pig, hornbill, hyena, and buffalo, but with the antelope being one of the most popular. The masks that represent supernatural spirits are always shown in an abstract form decorated with geometric patterns. The masks are used in ritual dances that mimic the movements of the animal. Bobo Mandinga peoples are one of the ethnic groups in severe decline, with them a rich cultural tradition is slowly coming to its end. Antique Ethnographic Art and Tribal Collectibles.
