A collection of artworks and photographs related to the oeuvre of the French Fauvist artist Andre Derain, 1880 to 1954. The lot includes an oil on canvas painting depicting a Fauvist landscape with a house behind trees cut in eighteen fragments, numbered on the backside. During his career, Andre Derain often cut his artwork. Five rare black and white photographs stamped on the back: Andre Derain. Two photographs depict portraits of Andre Derain, one shows the artist with a companion in a cafe, and two photographs show Derain on a yacht. And a handwritten letter from a German painter dated August 10, 1930, addressed to Arthur, signed by Leo. Both sides are illustrated with ink drawings. Text excerpt: Derain is here in Bandol. He has a big motor yacht. Presumably, this letter was written and illustrated by the German-Israeli painter Leo Kahn. In 1928, Kahn lived in South France, where he befriended Andre Derain. Note: French painter and sculptor Andre Derain was a leading figure of the avant-garde during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Derain is best known for his role in the development of Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse in the years following the turn of the century. The ways in which he abstracted his landscapes and figural scenes emphasized color as a conveyer of meaning in its own right. European Fine Art, Fauvist Artworks, And Wall Decor Collectibles.
