A fine antique Japanese Suzuri Bako writing set in a wooden case covered with black and gold lacquer. The lid is decorated with the taka-maki-e design of Hotei with three karako. The set comprises an inkstone and a water dropper. The taka-maki-e technique employs a mixture of lacquer putty, white lead, lampblack, powder, camphor, and gold or silver foil in relief against a lacquer ground. Meiji period, 1868 to 1912.
