Lot 0047: JUDAICA OLD TOWN WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS BY BEN AVRAM

41 reviews

Ben Avram, Indian, Israeli, born 1937, watercolor paintings on board, Jerusalem, and Old Town. Both are signed lower left. Framed. Provenance: Safrai Gallery, daten November 21, 1983, and signed, on paper labels, on the backside. Ben Avram is a Jewish artist, known for Figure, genre, seascape and landscape painting. He was born in Bombay, India, and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. He graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in 1965 and continues to call Jerusalem his home. Most of Ben Avrams oil paintings and watercolors portray Israeli cities, religious festivals, and Bible stories. He paints in creamy sensual tones incorporating symbols such as doves, a menorah, and Shabbat candles. Ben Avram is a Jerusalem painter, an artist who lives and breathes Jerusalem in most of his lively oil paintings and watercolors. The characters he depicts are not creations of a stranger overcome with the exotic. They are figures of people in their own world, harmony between man and his environment, a full life. His themes are mainly landscapes of his beloved Jerusalem, her arched alleyways, steep narrow streets, spires, citadels and gates in the wall of the ancient city. His seascapes, in delicate watercolors, of Jaffa and Acre have a minimal regard for such actualities as Natures laws but with the light and rhythm of a real Mediterranean seacoast. One of a kind artwork.
