A fine antique Satsuma earthenware pottery vase painted in polychrome enamels and gilt with a scene depicting 500 Rakan and a writhing dragon, the scales and other details picked out in low relief. Beautifully ornate to the neck and shoulders. Signed and bears a Shimazu Family mon to the base. Meiji period, 1868 to 1912. Note; Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
