Lot 0396: ANCIENT CHINESE MING DYNASTY HORSE RIDER STATUE

41 reviews

A finely modelled ancient Chinese Ming Dynasty pottery horseman statuette, likely part of a larger group of a parade consisting of musicians and soldiers. The horseman is rendered in a naturalistic manner, wearing a changshang, a traditional Manchu tunic worn by men, and a magua, a waist length jacket with wide short sleeves, with red painted conical caps on his head. The horseman is featured probably holding an object with one arm whilst the other is held in front. The facial features and a long braid, the traditional Manchu male hairstyle, are adorned with black pigmentation. The horse is portrayed in a stylized manner. Its sweeping mane is neatly groomed and emphasized by the original black pigmentation. The horses rider sits on a long saddle blanket. As customary for larger Ming attendant statues, the figures head is detachable. The statue is set on an integral rectangular base. Circa: 1368 to 1644 AD. Total weight: 2706 g.
