Nikolai Egorovich Sverchkov, Russian, 1817 to 1898, oil painting on board, Horse in a Field. Signed in Cyrillic lower left. Framed. Provenance: Gene Shapiro Auctions, November 19, 2011, lot 281. Nikolai Sverchkov is known for Animal scene and folk genre painting and lithographs. Nikolai Yegorovich Sverchkov was a Russian painter and engraver. His works begun to attract public attention from 1844. Sverchkovs Return From the Bear Hunt, exhibited in 1863, was bought by Napoleon III. For this and two other paintings, The Fair and The Station, Sverchkov was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor. Returning to Petersburg from abroad in 1864, Sverchkov painted The Turn out of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich on the Military Parade of 1664 for Alexander II. An animal painter, Sverchkov started his creative work at the Khrenovskiy and Chesmenskiy state stud farms. In 1844 Sverchkov did several lithographs, and by the end of 1840s he had painted three portraits. One of a kind artwork.
