An American Post Civil War, antique late 1880s tintype, or ferrotype, photographic print on metal plaque. The portrait of an Afroamerican lady dressed in a very popular garment although modified to American trends, based on a plaid blouse characterized by its puffy shoulders and much loose waist; complemented with a long skirt. Next to the standing woman you can see the portrait of her deceased husband and holding on her hands are documents accrediting her veterans condition. The presence of jewelry and a particular conservative hairstyle indicates a high social status. Tintype is the popular moniker for melainotype, which got its name from the dark color of the unexposed photographic plate, and ferrotype, named after the plates iron composition.
