A Post Civil War, antique late 1860s tintype, or ferrotype, photographic print on metal plaque. The portrait of a group of American frontiersmen veterans including an Afro-American who is the unique among them holding a Derby Billycock hat. The image is a Memento Mori, a memorabilia honoring one of the members of the group who appears dead at the left side of the image on a chair. It is interesting the diverse composition of fashion garments noticed through details like collars and accessories. Tintype is the popular moniker for melainotype, which got its name from the dark color of the unexposed photographic plate, and ferrotype, named after the plates iron composition.
