Lot 0074: RICHARD SUSSMAN AMERICAN WPA-STYLE PAINTING

41 reviews

Richard N. Sussman, American, 1908 to 1971, a Modernist WPA style painting depicting a harbor with a sailing ship. Signed by the artist in the lower right. White mat, white frame. Note: The WPA program made no distinction between representational and nonrepresentational art. Abstraction had not yet gained favor in the 1930s and 1940s, so was virtually unsalable. As a result, the Federal Art Project supported such iconic artists as Jackson Pollock before their work could earn them income.
