A color woodblock after Utagawa Kunisada, 1786 to 1865, a Japanese ukiyo-e artist considered the most commercially successful artist of the era. The print depicts a kabuki actor as a samurai with wagasa umbrella. Titled Actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Gosho no Gorozo. Dated 1864. Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese theatre, mixing dramatic performance with traditional dance that originated during the early Edo period. Gosho no Gorozo is an act of a six act play written by Kawatake Mokuami titled The Gallants Kimono Dyed with the Soga Pattern. The story focuses on the conflict between two former samurai, Gorozo and his enemy Hoshikage Doemon. Golden bamboo-style frame. Collectible Asian Oriental Graphic Art, Kabuki Theater.
