Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Japanese, 1798 to 1861, colored woodblock print on paper, Ukiyo e of Ise Saburo Yoshimori, From the series, Stories of a Hundred Heroes of High Renown, Musha e, warrior print, 1843 to 1844. Inscribed in the print upper to the center. Signed in the print lower right. Ise no Saburo Yoshimori was a faithful retainer of Yoshitsune who served him well during the war between the Taira and Minamoto. He fought at the Battle of Dan no ura, and died in battle at Mount Suzuka in Ise Province. He is shown here sitting on a rock holding an enormous ax. The young warrior looks over his shoulder with a determined expression, his wild hair pulled back into a ponytail. He wears a fur vest over his armor, his two swords tucked at his side. A beautifully detailed portrait of this heroic samurai.Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshis subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals.
