A pair of World War II German military decorations, the Narvik Shield and the Lorient Shield. The Narvik Shield was awarded to all German forces that took part in the battles of Narvik between 9 April and 8 June 1940. It was instituted on 19 August 1940 and was the first of a series of arm shield campaign awards. Lorient was a German submarine base in Brittany which remained an isolated area of resistance following the successful American attack on the beaches of Normandy in 1944 and the liberation of the area. The German troops were completely cut off from the rest of the army, so they created an unofficial badge themselves in a local fish cannery in 1944.
