Lot 0046: 17TH C FLEMISH OIL PAINTING ATTR TO GILLIS NEYTS

41 reviews

A fine antique 17th century Flemish school oil on canvas painting depicting a Classicist landscape, attributed to Gillis Neyts, Flemish, 1623 to 1687. Painting depicts a warm color palette landscape with ruins and human figures, on the right side in the foreground it depicts a man leading two mules. Apparently unsigned. Housed in an old richly decorated giltwood and gesso frame. Features paper labels inscribed in Italian on the backside, One of a kind artwork. Provenance: Raphael Bullrich Gallery Paintings Collection. Note: Note: The landscape painter and draftsman Gillis Neyts from Brabant was primarily active in Antwerp and Namur. Although documents record a sojourn to Spain, it is unlikely that the artist ever visited Italy, despite the appearance of some Italianate works within his oeuvre. Neyts spacious landscapes, painted in shades of green, brown, and yellow, follow the Flemish landscape tradition. Most of his works depict hilly landscapes featuring castles, overgrown ruins, and towns or villages in the background. Old Masters Paintings, Antique European Fine Art For Collectors.
