An antique Elkington artistic casting round shaped silver plated electro type bas relief plate, Toilet of Venus, after the model by Leonard Morel Ladeuil, French, 1820 to 1888. the plaque depicts a scene with a Pompeian lady, fresh from the bath, attended by her female slaves. The toilet is nearly completed; the necklace and armlets have been adjusted; one maiden is fastening the sandals to the anklets; another stands holding the robe shortly to be donned, and a third finishes the adornment of the hair while her mistress contemplates the effect in a mirror. The pose and expression of each one of these figures are a study, but the central figure is a marvel of grace and loveliness. Accessory to this group are the room, the furniture, the ornaments, the flowers, and the recess beyond. All these details it will be observed have been carefully studied and combined to give a most harmonious whole. Marked, Elkington, lower right. Signed and dated 1876, lower left. Leonard Morel Ladeuil, 1820 to 1888, French goldsmith and sculptor, was born at Clermont Ferrand. He was apprenticed first to Morel, a manufacturer of bronzes, under whom he became one of the most expert chasers, or ciseleurs, in France, and then to Antoine Vechte, to acquire the art of repousse the art in which he was to excel.
