An antique Japanese Meiji Era enamel brass kogo or box for incense. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The box is enameled with polychrome images of butterflies, floral and foliage patterns made in the Cloisonne technique. The base and the neck are decortaed with geometrical and swirl wavy motifs made in the Cloisonne technique. The ground of the vase is inlaid with Gold stones. Unmarked. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office. They also make great collectors items, and gifts.
