The War Order of Virtuti Militari, or Order Wojenny Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest military decoration for heroism and courage in the face of the enemy at war. 4th class, Gold Cross. World War II era. Blue and black ribbon, enameled gold cross with an eagle and inscription Virtuti Militari on the recto side and inscription Honor i Ojczyzna, Honor and Fatherland, 1792 on the verso side. The order was created in 1792 by Polish King Stanislaus II Augustus and is the oldest military decoration in the world still in use. Virtuti Militari is a Latin title meaning For Military Virtue.
