41 reviews

Alexandre Sacha Garbell, Latvian, French, 1903 to 1970, oil painting on canvas depicting a figurative scene. Signed lower right. Framed. Additionally Signed, inscribed and dated, Exposition Garbell October 1967, Gallery Bettie Themmen 1331, The phone, La Manche, on the backside. Provenance: Maywood Antiques, Maywood, NJ, United States, April 30, 2022, lot 26. Alexandre Sacha Garbell was born into a Jewish family in Riga, Latvia. Garbell studied under Bissière at the Academie Ranson. Soon he was exhibiting at the most prestigious Paris Salons the Salon des Superindependants, the Salon des Tuilieries, the Salon Automne, the Salon de Mai. Garbell exhibited in numerous galleries in Paris and New York after WWII, including personal exhibitions in Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Lausanne, Turin, London, New York, Amsterdam, and Zurich. As the art of Alexandre Garbell evolved towards abstraction, it retained that special luminosity that reflected his sensual involvement in the pleasures of colour and light. While affiliated with the School of Paris, he developed an individual style, which combined both Cubist and representational elements. At the beginning of his career he was drawn toward abstraction, but as his work progressed he became more interested in representational scenes. One of a kind artwork.
