Jean-Francois-Theodore Gechter (French, 1796–1844) bronze figural group "The unwanted visitor" depicts a naturalistically modeled horse and lizard. The surface is covered with a light brown patina. Apparently unsigned. Jean Francois Theodore Gechter spent most of his life living and working in Paris. He studied under Bosio and Gros, and exhibited his own work at the Salon from 1827 to 1844, becoming a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1837. He sculpted numerous heroic figures and bas-reliefs for public statuary, as well as portrait busts of his contemporaries, but his friendship with the great Barye led to an interest in later life in animalier sculpture too.
