An antique Persian ceremonial mace made of steel. Lade Qajar dynasty, before 1925. Long cylindrical shaft with knob pommel, bell shaped collar, and figural horned devils head club. The item is decorated with etched and engraved floral ornaments. The horned head represents Yazid I, the leader of the Moslems from 680 to 683, who killed Husain, grandson of Mohammed the Prophet and son of Ali, who had refused Yasid his allegiance. The Shiites, who look upon Ali as the legitimate succesor of the Prophet and on Husain as a saint and martyr, carry the mace in the region of Tabriz on the anniversary of Husains death.
