An antique 18th to 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon representing Elijah, also named Ilyas or Ilya in Orthodox tradition, the Old Testament prophet. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board, gilt background and chased framing. The iconography of this icon is titled The Fiery Ascent of Elijah the Prophet, the prophet is surrounded by images of saints and scenes from his life. The characters are named in Church Slavonic.
