An antique Baroque Russian Orthodox icon representing the Holy Face Jesus Christ or Mandylion, known in the Western tradition as the Image of Edessa, circa 1800. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The Mandylion is held by the archangels and is decorated with painted roses. Four saints and an angel are depicted on the sides. Each character is named in Church Slavonic. This image refers to the first Christian icon, a square or rectangular cloth upon which a miraculous image of the face of Jesus had been imprinted.
