An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Virgin Mary and Christ Child in the Our Lady of the Sign or Znameniye iconography. Travel icon of miniature size. Mixed media paintings: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is enclosed in a silver riza or oklad with repousse decor. Incription Virgins Sign in Church Slavonic on the bottom. Hallmark 84 silver standard and makers marks are on the side of the riza. The backside of the icon is covered with pink velvet. This iconography symbolizes the pregnancy of the Virgin, it shows Mary with hands raised for praying and the figure of the holy infant in her chest in the circle.
