A 1940s hand-carved Sankofa from Ashanti region, Ghana. Made of non-endangered Sese wood and decorated with pierced geomterical decor. Sankofa is a traditional Ghanaian stool, a sacred household object. The Sankofa stools are often decorated with a symbol depicting a moving bird with its head turned backwards, representing the passage of time.
