Chelyuskin was a Soviet steamship, reinforced to navigate through polar ice in 1933, that became ice-bound in Arctic waters during navigation along the Northern Maritime Route and sank. The people on board were rescued by air. The catastrophe inspired many works of art, and its memory is preserved in the topography of many cities of the former Soviet Union.
